Streamload, a San Diego-based company providing online storage services, is adding more than a terabyte a week of storage to its network to keep ahead of consumer demands for online storage, said CEO Steve Iverson at the AlwaysOn Stanford Summit taking place here this week.

“We’ve got data centers in San Diego, Phoenix and Frankfurt, Germany. Half of our customers are outside the U.S.,” he said. “We are storing over 8 billion files.”

The boom in online storage is being driven by an explosion of digital content. When Hotmail first arrived on the scene, consumers typically stored data in the form of e-mails and attachments on online services. Now, they want to store music, movies, pictures and blogs, and access it all through different devices.

“It’s not just about expanded storage capacity. It’s also about remotely accessing your data,” Iverson added. Approximately 80,000 people a week open new storage accounts on Streamload’s network.

Microsoft Working on Online Storage

Microsoft is working on an online storage service that appears to be competition for Google’s service called Gdrive which is also in development, according to sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans. It is currently codenamed Microsoft Live Drive.

Microsoft spokesman Adam Sohn confirmed the existence of a project which is code-named Live Drive for searching and sharing files between PCs and devices with the Sharing Folders feature in Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger email chat client. The project is also investigating ways to share and synchronize folders based on Microsoft’s acquisition of FolderShare, he said. Sohn declined to give further details.

Fortune Magazine also confirms that Microsoft is planning to launch an online storage service.

Google and Microsoft are in a heated battle to be the one company that Internet users turn to for accessing information and services online. Already both companies offer free storage for e-mail, so hosting other types of personal data would be an extension of what they already do.

Blogtopper.com believes at this time both gdrive and live drive are shooting for a paid subscription service but as the competition heats up this could all change.
